The developing egg in the ovary produces oestrogen, which triggers the preparation of a thicker uterus lining during the first few days of the menstrual cycle. This thick lining is well supplied with capillaries and is essential if the fertilised egg, descending from the fallopian tubes (or oviducts), is to find a place to implant and begin to grow in the uterus.
